FORM

The Act of Becoming

Form is a story of giving a new journey to

the bits and fragments of Purani Dilli. It is a collection of tactile textiles that are inspired from the textures of Old Delhi's lanes.

Form is an experimental approach to systemically turn pre-consumer waste

fabrics into one-of-a-kind yardages

and jackets.

"Delhi was once a paradise, Where Love held sway and reigned; But its charm lies ravished now And only ruins remain."

Material plays a  primary role in

telling this story of Old Delhi in textures. The sourcing for this

project was done from Sanjay Market.

Sanjay market is a katran

market situated near Govindpuri, Delhi. It is a hub of rag-pickers. Being an overwhelming experience, Sanjay market is a window into the heaps and heaps of waste dumped without a thought from the export houses.

The materials sourced had their own intrinsic properties, but using them cohesively in a collection posed a complexity of its own.

How Might We

talk to our Material ?

The first step towards understanding a material is to spend time with it  and observe its characteristics. This includes anticipating the affordances of the said material in order to find opportunities in its underlying complexity and dynamism.

Treating the waste like it was a human being with its own intrinsic qualities helped in fins=ding the appropriate match for it in order to highlight its qualities.

Studying the properties of different raw material groups..

02.

Mapping trends in the dynamism of the qualities of the material groups in relation to each other.

03.

Understanding material complexity and its impact on Paiwand's system of up cycling.

Purani Dilli

The tactile story of the textiles take one through the space as the day turns to night. During the day, the now worn out streets of Chandni Chowk became resplendent with textures and tones under by a curious touch.

Despite the afternoon sun, the air is cold with a hint of nostalgia deeper into these alleyways. It becomes evident how time acts on spaces and structures and makes them organic unlike the Mughal monuments that are usually marked by a silky refinement.

In the rays of golden hour, the city lights up in the shadows of the past. Jharokhas become a poetry that is written in light. The evenings at Chandni Chowk are short as they make space for the grandeur of the moon . The tender moonlight lights up against the night sky. The beautiful light play takes one back when. mir Taqi Mir said,

“These are not the streets of Dilli but the canvas of an artist,
every sight I see is like a painting”.

The charm of a moonlit night here is almost as calming as the water canals that must have glistened throughout the nights of Sixteenth century Dilli before being submerged by the dawn of a new day. The poetry of the place begins at the textures of the chowks and reverberates through the naming of the place Chandni Chowk after the rhythmic shadows of the moon on moving waters.
